To create a truly child-friendly Da Nang where no child or adolescent is left behind, listening to and respecting their voices is crucial. Since 2016, the Children’s Council, piloted in seven districts by Da Nang Youth Union, has provided a platform for children to express their views and share their aspirations on issues they care about.

Expanding the Children’s Council Model with UNICEF’s Support

As part of the Child Friendly City Initiative (CFCI) and the Healthy Cities for Adolescents Phase II (HCA-II) project in Da Nang (2023-2026), UNICEF Vietnam has partnered with the Da Nang Youth Union to expand this model to commune and ward levels.

In November 2024, ten additional Children’s Councils were established in new communes and wards, bringing the total to 31 out of 56 across the city. These new locations include:

  • Hoa Lien and Hoa Tien Communes (Hoa Vang District)
  • Hoa Khanh Bac Ward (Lien Chieu District)
  • Thuan Phuoc and Thanh Binh Wards (Hai Chau District)
  • Thanh Khe Tay and An Khe Wards (Thanh Khe District)
  • My An Ward (Ngu Hanh Son District)

Children’s Voices: Innovative Initiatives for a Better Da Nang

During elections with the theme “What would you do if you became the Chairperson of the Commune/Ward Children’s Council?”, delegates (aged 9-15) confidently presented their initiatives and ideas. Discussions covered a wide range of issues, including:

  • Physical and mental health
  • School nutrition
  • Preventing violence in schools and online
  • Environmental protection and plastic waste reduction
  • Child protection and self-protection skills
  • Reducing academic pressure and creating spaces for creative play

The innovative use of technology to address children’s issues was particularly impressive. Children proposed the establishment of community libraries, playgrounds for disadvantaged children, and support programs for children in need.

Children’s Council: Fostering Skills, Driving Change

Children’s Council is not only platforms for self-expression but also valuable spaces for developing crucial skills such as public speaking, communication, and teamwork. A representative from the Da Nang Youth Union emphasized: “The Children’s Council bridges the gap between children’s opinions and city leaders, boosting children’s confidence and enabling them to contribute to their communities.”

Towards a Da Nang Where No One is Left Behind

The Children’s Council is a clear demonstration of the commitment to promoting children’s participation and building a friendly, healthy, and sustainably developing Da Nang. They are not just places where children are heard, but bridges that transform ideas into action, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to contribute to their own future.
